1.
I have a well and a softener. Do
I need a sediment pre-filter?
MICRON
recommends that a sediment whole-house pre-filter be
installed before your softener to take contaminant
load off of your softener resin bed. The resin bed
is designed to soften, not necessarily filter the
water. Without a pre-filter, any dirt or sediment
coming from your well will have to pass directly
into the softener. Having a pre-filter keeps the
resin bed cleaner. 25 to 50 micron filters do a good
job. Some of our customers use 1 micron pre-filters
with very good results.

2. Will
MICRON Wound Filter Cartridges fit my 10”
filter housing?
MICRON's
2 ¼” and 2 ½” diameter filters are wound on a 9
27/32” long core and will fit most common 10” filter
housings. MICRON
filter cartridges are direct replacements for most
popular filters such as Home Depot, Sears, Cuno,
Keystone, American Plumber, Aqua-Pure, Grainger,
McMaster Carr, etc. We also manufacture 4 ½”
diameter filters on the same 9 27/32” length core.
These cartridges, however, fit only the larger
diameter housings also available from
MICRON. Some
manufacturers call these housings the Big Blue
style.

3. Are
MICRON's Wound Filter Cartridges micron
ratings nominal or absolute?
MICRON
wound
filter cartridges are rated as nominal. A nominal
rating means that about 80% of contaminant particles
above the rating will be held within the filter.
Absolute rated filters are generally of the pleated
style and hold contaminants on the surface of the
filter only.

I do not
have a well but have a "city water" supply. I do not
have a softener. Should I still install a filter in
my house?
MICRON
recommends that you install a whole-house filter in
the incoming water supply line to your house. Even
though the supply is relatively clean, you may
notice that small sand particles may still collect
in your faucet aerators. This sediment also passes
through your water heater and may collect there as
well which could cause premature failure of the
heater.

How do I know when the filter
cartridge needs to be changed?
The amount of sediment that is present in the
incoming water supply can vary greatly from house to
house, city to city, etc. Therefore, it is hard to
predict how long a filter cartridge will function
before it is time to change it. However,
MICRON
recommends that pressure gauges be installed just
before and immediately after the filter housing so
differences in pressure across the filter can be
monitored. Typically, a filter cartridge needs to be
replaced when the difference in pressure readings
reaches about 15 PSI under full flow conditions.

6.
What
is the life expectancy of a filter cartridge?
The life of a filter cartridge is very much
dependent on the initial quality of the water that
it will be filtering.
Claims by some manufacturers of 3000 gallons,
5000 gallons, or even 15000 gallons of filtered
water before the filter needs to be changed can be
misleading. No one can claim a specific filter life
without knowing the
condition of the water that the cartridge will be
filtering.

Will MICRON Activated Carbon filter cartridges
reduce bad taste and odor from my water?
While MICRON Activated Carbon filter
cartridges do not have 100% of their volume as
Activated Carbon, the inner layer of high
performance Activated Carbon has shown to reduce
odor and bad taste of water. Thecarbon layer
is very dense and any flow through the filter must
pass through the carbon.
