Most homes and farms obtain their water from wells. Well pumps bring up sediment from the ground which is then pumped directly into the water system, typically beginning with the water softener. Sediment can then move on to other items such as water heaters, toilets, faucets, etc. In time, this sediment accumulates, causing premature fixture or appliance failure. We have found that MICRON string wound filter cartridges are able to trap sediment and some iron when used as a pre-filter before your water softener.  we like to use a 1 micron pre-filter.  After the softener, we use a MICRON Activated Carbon Filter Cartridge to help reduce odors and bad taste. 

The quality of water and amount of sediment varies from well to well, therefore the life of the filter cartridge will also vary. Filter life claims of 3000 gallons, 5000 gallons, etc., by other manufacturers can be misleading.  Again, filter life is very dependent on the initial water quality.
